Beach vacations for lovebirds
Four beach vacations that will make your heart swoon
Every beach has the typical ingredients – water and sand – but it’s how Mother Nature pulls it all together that makes for some of the most romantic beach vacations. Here’s a look at different coastal settings for your next dream vacation.
Puerto Rican waves
When you throw in some crashing waves into your beach vacation, romance is kicked into high gear with the locale’s adrenaline-filled adventures. A little body boarding will get your limbs warmed up, and surfing will bring on a surge of endorphins. In the wintertime, the surf is up in beautiful Puerto Rico, although it ebbs and flows the entire year. Depending on the beach you hit up, swells can vary, so make sure you check the surf reports to match your skillset. Check into a hotel with beach club privileges, such as El Convento Hotel, where guests can enjoy its sister properties world-class beaches, or plan a stay at Caribe Hilton, set on a secluded peninsula with 17 acres of lush foliage and its own beach. Stay close to the action of the city while not straying far from the beach at The Condado Plaza Hilton, located in the heart of San Juan on the Condado Lagoon.
The sea has a magical way of churning out some of history’s most romantic love stories. Often these stories are from a time when sailors ventured off to sea and the beacon of a lighthouse returned them home. So if you’re looking for a romantic beach vacation, consider Cape Cod where you can laze away the day at the beach or seek out the solitude of the area’s spectacular dunes. Meanwhile, Martha’s Vineyard gives the lighthouse scene an island twist. For up-close hotel views of the Edgartown Lighthouse, check into the Harbor View Hotel of Martha's Vineyard, the “Grande Dame” of Martha’s Vineyard.
The Gulf’s sugary sands
Sink your toes into a little slice of heaven when you search out a beach on the Gulf of Mexico. We’re particularly fond of St. Pete Beach, a Floridia island nestled in the balmy waters of the Gulf. Boasting some of the softest sands, this is a place made for sand castles, which is probably why Thomas Rowe built his Mediterranean-style pink palace, the Loews Don CeSar Hotel, on the island. Opened at the height of the Gatsby era in 1928, the Don serves up sugar-fine beaches and palatial accommodations. This island getaway feels like paradise with its tropical birds, lush surroundings and lapping water.
Hawaiian beach vacations
We can’t bring up beaches without mentioning Hawaii, and Waikiki makes our list of island favorites because this locale takes some of the ingredients we mentioned above (like surfing endorphins and sugary sand) and mixes it with the ultimate romantic retreat. Hilton Hawaiian Village® Waikiki Beach Resort touts itself as Waikiki's only resort destination with 22 acres of mid-Pacific beachfront property. Did we mention it has its own private salt water lagoon? Down the beach at Moana Surfrider, A Westin Resort & Spa, Moana Lani Spa offers the island’s only beachfront spa, where “ocean, heaven and healing meet.” And perhaps most noticeably, The Royal Hawaiian, A Luxury Collection Resort, known to the world as “The Pink Palace of the Pacific,” has been welcoming guests since 1927.
